Dogs and cats do not often get cavities, but they do frequently suffer from other types of dental disease.  Periodontal or gum disease, in fact, is the number one illness found in both dogs and cats.

Periodontal disease may cause:

*  Bad Breath, which is the by product of the bacteria in  the plaque that causes the odor.

*  Bacterial Infections in organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys - when there is bad periodontal disease,  there can be a bacterial shower into the blood stream every time your pet chews.

*  Kidney disease and infection in cats have been associated with long term dental disease.
